The Annual Installation of Chapter Officers was celebrated with family and friends on Tuesday, January 12

at Mimi's Cafe. They entertained in four-part-harmony,
to the enjoyment of restaurant patrons and staff.
Among those present were Chapter Founding Member,
Bill King and long-time member and supporter, Elling Sagen and his family.
Dinner began at 6:30 PM followed by the ritual un-installation of the 2009 Officers.

Holiday Joy

The Chorus has really been active this holiday season with 6 performances in the harmony style. Pictured is the chorus performing at the Friendly Valley Community in our "Winter" costumes.

In addition to the the traditional seasonal favorites, two quartets, "3 D's and an R" and "Blue Plate Special." sang non-holiday favorites. (At least they were Our favorites!)

The Chorus was received with a warm response from each of the groups we entertained. The talents of the SCV Men of Harmony were a true gift from the Chorus to our local community. Contact us ASAP to have the Chorus entertain YOUR group or organization.

The Men of Harmony will be performing on the following dates at the following events...

Dec. 6, Sunday, Valencia Town Center- outside Patios, the new venue at the south entrance of Mall. We sing at 4 PM. Arrive 3:30 PM. Formal Vest Outfits.

Dec. 7, Monday, Friendly Valley Auditorium. We sing at 7 PM, warm up at 6:45 PM, in casual holiday attire, w/ hats and maybe scarves. (No chorus Vests etc.)

Dec. 13, Sunday, Senior Center, Market St. 10:30 church service (arrive 10:00 AM) 3 PM full public performance. Full Performance Outfits.

December 15, Tuesday, Valley Oaks Village Apartments, (Our regular meeting room) warm-up 6:45 PM, sing 7 PM. Formal performance costume.

Dec 18, Friday, It's A Grind Coffee House, Castaic at Hasley Cyn. Time TBD. Open Mike Night. Formal Performance Outfit.

2010 date:
Feb. 27, 8 PM, OLPH Catholic Church multi-purpose room. More info soon....

We're sad to report that the Nov 21 holiday program has been canceled due to overwhelming commitments by the groups involved. Fortunately we have over a year to make next year's huge holiday bash a great success. And until then, we'll keep you posted about upcoming holiday-themed performances.

It was something out of the early 20th Century at the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center on July 5. The Men of Harmony sang in perfect harmony as a chorus and in quartets. The sweet sounds were accompanied by the audience, walking around, sitting in chairs or joining in with Sing Alongs while enjoying all-you-can-eat portions of ice cream. Adding to festivities is Richard Roelofs playing heart-tugging old favorites on the piano. And for the kids? The amazing balloon man, Keith Oberg, created a world of miniature animals and giant smiles. Magician Namron the Magnificent enthralled children and adults alike.Prizes included a Nutcracker as big as the young boy who won it. Finding harmony
Barbershop singers relax with music, fellowship

Bill Wolf runs a local travel business, which often leaves him stressed.

But give him a couple hours performing with Santa Clarita Valley Men of Harmony every Tuesday, a local barbershop singers group, and he'll go home refreshed.

"I know when I go over there, sooner or later, I'm going to wind down," Wolf, 70, said, who serves as the organization's vice president of marketing and public relations.

The experience of being part of a barbershop quartet is beneficial to Wolf, even if he was a little reluctant when he joined the group about seven years ago.

But the accepting attitude of others in the group, along with what he considered an educational opportunity, put that reluctance to rest, he said.

We are a small men's a cappella ensemble dedicated to providing the Santa Clarita Valley community with quality musical entertainment. We sing for all types of events and our repertoire offers a variety of genres to fit any occasion.

HISTORY
The Harmony Hills Barbershop Chorus formed in 1972 as a chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America, Inc. Since then, the society has become simply the Barbershop Harmony Society, and we've become the Santa Clarita Valley Men of Harmony. Our new name reflects our growing involvement in the community and the extension of our range of songs to include music outside the traditional barbershop realm.

MISSION
The mission of our hobby is to have fun, meet new friends, and join other guys who love to sing well.

MEMBERS
Our backgrounds are as different as our occupations and ages. What we have in common is the joy that comes from joining others in the ringing of pure a cappella voices. Whether your musical background is karaoke, country, church choir, the piano bar, or the shower, we have a spot for you.

THE MUSIC
Four-part, unaccompanied, close-harmony singing, with melody in the second voice, called the “lead.” Tenor (counter-tenor voice) harmonizes above the lead singer; bass sings the lowest harmonizing notes, and the baritone provides in-between notes, to form consonant, pleasing chords. Barbershop is a “melting pot” product of African-American musical devices, European hymn-singing culture, and an American tradition of recreational music. Melodies are in the vocal and skill range of the average singer, with lyrical emphasis on simple, heartfelt emotions.
